Details (#6)

I can't decide which South Pas neon sign I love most. There's the historic one above Gus's. There's the Fair Oaks Pharmacy sign above the door as well as the one around the corner that, if taken out of context, makes hipsters giggle and jab each other in the ribs. We can't forget the newer Parking sign on Meridian that seems to conjure images of Raymond Chandler characters. They are all great bits of colored light.

Here, Shakers lets us know that it will always provide us with breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a lovely reminder. In fact, whenever I walk past this sign on the way toward the entrance, it makes my mouth water. We always think of neon as a beckoning from far away, but doesn't it look great up close?

I continue my week of Little Details -- exploring South Pas in a magnified view.

I like that for those of us who aren't familiar with it, we don't get the entire name. Could it be Bakery? Lakers? Quaker? or perhaps Faker? Just my mind wandering. I wish I were standing outside right now because it's early, and I want breakfast, but don't want to prepare it myself.

Shakers is the name. They also make lovely furniture. Neon is cool and seems timeless, in a retro way.

Laurie already wrote in her post that Shakers is the name. Doesn't anyone read the actual post?

Loving all these signs. South Pas is lucky to keep so many of these businesses in these hard economic times. I remember bringing my kids into Family Fair many years ago, and Dick and Clara being so patient with their candy selections. I read your piece about them in Patch awhile back. Loving your blog here, and sorry I get so sappy about South Pas.

If we elect Salinas, Margrave, and Ten on November 8, we'll really have something to cry about. I'm voting for Khubesrian, Schneider, and Bob Joe.

And yes, Shakers sells breakfast, pies, and furniture. I'll have two apple pies and a loveseat please.
