the fig tree languisheth...

The Bible sure mentions palm trees a lot.
I barely remember this part of my Lutheran elementary school education. In fact, what I remember most about my school Bible studies is the fact that my 6th grade teacher Mrs. Lange told me that I would burn in hell if I kept passing notes to David Bethke instead of concentrating on learning the genealogies of Genesis 5 and 11.
But that's a different blog post, altogether.
I take a lot of pictures of palm trees, as many of you may have noticed. (Or, to quote my dear Shanna, "There she goes again with another old car or palm tree!") One can only say so much about Los Angeles' most iconic and ubiquitous tree. Occasionally one must look for quotes to, you know, add something to the conversation.
Quotes like this:
“The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.”
Yeah, the Bible made palm trees seem about as boring as all the verses about who begat whom. Let's try another one: “They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.” I think whoever added that to the Bible had been sitting out in the desert sun for too long.
There's always this: “How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights! / This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.”
Now, we're talking! I definitely didn't study that part of the Bible in Mrs. Lange's class!
(Next time I post a palm tree shot, I'm going to make Shanna come up with a quote for me...)

To Your Health

The raw food people tell us that the secret to health and longevity is consumption of copious amounts of uncooked, unprocessed vegetables and fruits. Paleo eaters maintain that our hunter/gatherer genes require animal protein, lower carbohydrates and, yes, some of those raw, unprocessed vegetables. Then again, the Aruvedic experts chime in with advice to make sure to eat warm, cooked energy foods -- like potatoes -- to mitigate the effects of excess pitta in your dosha. Mind/Body experts tell us that our happiness index largely determines our health, and that adding moderate amounts of sugar and caffeine boosts our brain serotonin, making us feel happier and, in turn, boosting our immune systems.
Well. I have the perfect solution:
In n Out's number 1 combo, protein style. Yup. The ultimate health food is a lettuce-wrapped burger, fries and a coke.
Stay with me, here. It's got enough red meat to make the paleo eaters happy without a big, bad, industrialized, overprocessed white flour bun. The lettuce and tomato on the burger are raw, and you know what that means ... unadulterated micronutrients, people! Add a few pitta-extinguishing french fries and an happiness-inducing/energy-boosting coke and you've got a meal worthy of its own food pyramid.
(As you might have noticed, I manage to find the health properties in foods our experts overlook...)

Another Shameless Birthday Post

Look who is growing up ENTIRELY TOO FAST!

Because today is Little Bit's 7th birthday, she told me to tell all of you that everybody gets seven wishes.

"Just be sure to use the wishes wisely, Mommy. I'm serious. And no using a wish to wish for even more wishes because that's just rude."

Indeed.

Now, go out and have some cake!

Greenlisted

Phil slowed down and looked at the property. Isolated? Check. Right color scheme? Check. Vaulted ceilings?

"Damn!" He said. "No vaulted ceilings!"

Once again, Phil drove on. (It wasn't easy being the Jolly Green Giant's realtor.)

Happy to Oblige

This whimsical convertible van was parked here for almost 7 hours yesterday. (And yes, that umbrella was attached to it.) Given its choice of parking spot, I think it wanted its picture taken...

Hmmm...

So what's on the menu this year, everyone?

(We won't be making that. But we will be making these.)

Art in the Ordinary (#2)

I've given up trying to eat all of the roasted pumpkin seeds left over from our four Halloween jack-o-lanterns. (I've decided to photograph them instead...)

Mystery Object

It's the first day of the month, and that means it's Theme Day for participating City Daily Photo bloggers. Today's theme is Mystery Object. Well, I hate to spoil everyone's fun but I know exactly what this thing is. At least, I have a few ideas... It's a robot stairclimber. A literal translation of cubism. An early, unsuccessful predecessor to the Rubix cube. It's an ironic take on square pegs and round holes. A National Endowment for the Arts grant winner. A temple for the worship of square dancing. Something left behind by someone who really thought outside the box. A fabulous use of unwanted apple crates. An alien DNA strand. Spare parts for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. A sign that the singularity will definitely happen sooner than we think... Or maybe not. Whatever it is, it can be found at Orange Grove playground. And as every parent knows, the way children transform from babies into big kids and beyond is definitely the biggest mystery of all. For other oddball sightings, take a look at my fellow City Daily Photo bloggers from around the globe. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

Coffee Talk

There are a lot of ways to satisfy your coffee jones in South Pasadena. Kaldi is a great option, especially if you have your java outside under the trees on one of these warm autumn days. (Just pop a Benadryl first if you're allergic to fall elm. They're pollinating like crazy right now.)

Speaking of coffee, I was listening to the XM Public Radio station yesterday and I caught the last part of a piece about how new words get into the Oxford English Dictionary. Apparently, one of the program hosts was trying to see if she could get the word "flatte" to catch on. That's flatte, pronounced "flah-tay" as in a shortened version of "decaf latte." A local coffee shop even joined in the fun and featured Flatte as their Drink of the Day.

Is it any surprise that not one person ordered a flatte for the entire day? Anyone at Kaldi -- or Charlie's or Busters or Starbucks -- could tell you why. Who in the world wants a DECAF latte?!

NOW I get it!

I'm not sure how I would have figured out my take-out if not for these thoughtful instructions.

Older. (Still a Goofball.)

Shameless birthday post? Oh yeah!

Now, all of you go out and have a big slice of chocolate cake.

World's Saddest Bench

This poor bench depresses me every time I see it. I have been tempted to try and sit on it, just to make it feel useful! (Then again, people like me are the reason this commercial was created...)

Caption This Photo (#68)

Nobody realized Flat Stanley had a little sister...

No?

Okay, then. What have you guys got for this one?

Still, it's a cool fireplace...

When I spotted this whimsical chalk addition to the old fireplace at Eddie Park, I thought it would make an interesting photo for a blog post about summer. Something about how summer is lazy and whimsical, filled with daydreaming and make believe and playtime...

Playtime.

With your six year old.

Your six year old who is home from school but still getting up at 6:00AM with all the energy of opening day at a cheerleading convention.

Your six year old who is convinced that playing should involve lots of running. Outside. When it's hot. With you!

So, I realized that I have nothing to say about this photo because there is NOTHING lazy about summer if you're a parent. How long until September again?

Rules

Well, I don't mind giving up the dogs and rollerskates but no tackle football or golf horses? Forget it!
