Camera Crossing

I've posted before about the abundance of film and television location shoots in South Pasadena. (Even in my own neighborhood!) Here, crew members wheel a camera across El Centro at Meridian. I bumped into three separate productions around town on the day I snapped this shot. Some may find it annoying, but I love it that my city serves as a back lot. Then again, you guys know how much I like to imagine scenes from movies...

I thought that was the lunch truck! Wasn't that when the opened the "Bridal Salon" in the new lofts building opposite Nicole's?

I believe the same company who makes those carts makes similar enclosed ones as you see people in NYC wheeling them about the city during the Westminster Dog Show, with dogs inside. Austin used to have so many films shot here and was called "the Third Coast" but because of tax incentives and the like, production companies have gone to Mississippi and Louisiana where they can make a film at a lesser cost. The City of Austin is trying to make it more appealing again, but that involves politics and well.... you know how that goes.

I had lunch at Bistro de la Garre on Wednesday and had a similar view across the street. The buidling behind these folks is one of my favorites in South Pasadena. I don't know what type of business is conducted there, but the red brick and gray/green flagstone combined with nice landscaping makes for an inviting place to work.

At first glace, it looks like the guy in front is getting a ride on the cart. You can see that he's walking along side and his right foot is about to step down.

I understand that filming is down in the region, but it certainly isn't in South Pas. There are film shoots nearly every day, sometimes several in a day.

db: That building used to house Athens, the garbage collection people, I believe, or maybe it was the garbage people before Athens. The bricks at one time were painted white, but the sandblasted the paint off a few years ago. Made it look much nicer.

The very spot where the cart is is where my buddy Riley has his fruit stand at the Farmers Market. I usually buy grapes from him.

Interestingly, the company in the brick building now is Stargate Studios, which appears to do computer-generated film effects.

And it's good for the California economy. There are too many "runaway" productions these days heading up to Canada.

I always notice that brick building, too. It's so charming and old-fashioned.

One of the coolest productions that has filmed around town is Mad Men. I'd LOVE to see Don Draper and the gang ... especially here!
