Film Guy on the Move

When you live in South Pas, you get used to yielding the right of way to film and TV crews. Here, a production company guy wheels a mystery machine across the 110 Freeway overpass on Arroyo Drive.

I can't complain. We just got a check from NBC for the use of our driveway last month. Woot!

For more on South Pas as a backlot for Hollywood, I did a piece about it for Patch back in November, 2010. Check it out here. (And yes, for those of you who have asked, my Patch column will be back soon. I have just been on hiatus. Isn't that what they call it in Tinseltown?)

I think that would be so much fun, to have filming going around the community all of the time. Austin, known as the Third Coast for it's film companies and shooting schedule (not to mention its huge music scene), has lost some of it's appeal due to tax incentives now given by Mississippi and Louisiana. The powers that be here in local and state government are re-thinking their position on that, and more shows and movies are going to be filmed here. I was an extra in a made-for-tv movie years ago. I loved it.

Laurie and I were extras in a Willie Nelson movie many years ago. Our ten minutes of filming took ten days. Laurie was featured prominately in a dance hall scene and my part remained on the cutting room floor. We had to drive to the country every day and get home about 1:00AM, wash and dry our clothes. so that we could wear the same thing the next day. I had an interesting conversation with Willie who sang, "Georgia" for me at the close of a days's shootig. It was interesting and fun to see how it all worked.

I just read your Patch piece and thought it was fantastic. Do you remember that show called Family from back in the 70's? I remember finding the house it was filmed at and standing in the driveway of it trying to get a good peak inside. I believe that house was in South Pas or just over the border into Pasadena. I also stood out in the dark and the cold at 2AM to get a glimpse of Paul Newman and Robert Redford filming a scene for The Sting. I just love how South Pas is so charming that Hollywood just can't leave you guys alone!

They were filming there before Xmas as well. Any idea what the movie/TV series is?

I was paid really well for allowing a crew to use my garden for their lunch, and for allowing a couple of movie stars to use my house to sit around in between takes. Wow! And it's tax free!

So much filming going on lately around Pas, SPas, Chapman Woods, Monrovia. Sometimes I see a commercial sign and realize it is a prop.
