I just love this old sign. It's such a symbol of the not-so-distant past -- all that brightly colored late 1950s optimism when even doing laundry was something to declare in big, bold letters!
And speaking of remnants of the past, I've got a new column up today at South Pasadena Patch. (It should be posted sometime in the morning, Pacific Time.) See if you recognize some of South Pasadena's historic little details... (For those of you who have trouble connecting via phone, try this link instead and scroll down to find my column.)

I don't know who Señor Fish is, but that certainly adds a touch of whimsy and humor to the laundromat sign. I love old signs. I love old laundromats!
In fact, I've always wanted to do a bridal shoot in one. She'd have to be a pretty funky bride, but having a veiled beauty coming out of a commercial sized dryer, or wheeling down the aisle in a laundry cart just seems so fun - so much more so than a cheesy grin in front of a blooming bougainvillea.
When I saw the title of your post, "LaunderLand at Sunset" I immediately thought of Gene, I guy I worked with over 30 years ago who owned a LaunderLand on Sunset at Silver Lake Blvd. Gene said it was a great business because it was all cash. He had a partner named Roland. Gene would go by and empty the machines and there would be "a quarter for Gene, a quarter for Roland, and a quarter for the IRS."
Senor Fish is a good Mexican restaurant. There are about four of them. I used to eat at one at First and Central in Little Tokyo. The others are in Eagle Rock and Highland Park.
I'm sure Senor Fish is a good spot, but not too sure I'd want my laundry to smell like his restaurant.
Love the color of the sky and the sign!!! The fifties look indeed!!!
And Senor Fish is a great place...I ate at the Eagle Rock one..fabulous fish tacos!!!
Love Senor Fish.
This photo looks like another time.
Next time I do my laundry here (and I do my laundry here from time to time because nobody steals it when I'm at work), I'll channel this photo.
Then go next door and get a fish taco at Senor Fish!!!
Can you believe I haven't been to Señor Fish? Everyone around here raves about it.
If you like fish tacos...it's a must!!! I'm sure their other food is great too, but I always get the fish tacos and some guacomole!!!
I ate at the downtown Senor Fish before. Yum-yum! I didn't realize there was one in Pasadena. I must swing by one of these days.
I've eaten at the Little Tokyo Senor Fish. The only time I went to the South Pas one, it was new, and too crowded. Before Senor Fish, it was a Dominico's Pizza, and I can't recall what it was before that. There used to be a coffee and tea store next door. It finally gave way to the chain stores I suppose. Whenever I think of Launderland, I think of Springsteens Jungleland. But that's my problem. Was that you I saw out on the trail the other day wearing stilettos?
Thats the favored laundromat of the downtown art scene. Dinner, laundry and grocery shopping. Did I mention it was my Laundromat. I almost called you to meet me there last Monday night
Senior Fish in downtown used to be the atomic cafe back in the day (closed in 85). Hideous food but the best juke box around
