Snapshot from Gus's
The decor of Gus's BBQ inspires me almost as much as the garlic mashed potatoes. I couldn't resist a quick shot of those wonderful booths, pendant lamps and vintage South Pas photos. Next time, I'm bringing my good camera. (It was well worth braving Fair Oaks to get there yesterday. Actually, we just snuck around the back way through the alley.)

I like the bead board and the old fashioned booths. I need to check it out on my next visit.
Gus's has been a South Pasadena institution since the late 40's. It's got the best sign in town - a big neon pig. Until it sold about 3 years ago, it was worn out. It had a loyal, but older clientele, a dated menu, and it was due for renovation. Besides that, it was a barbecue restaurant that didn't have particularly good barbecue. The long time owner sold it to some younger guys who have a very successful fast food restaurant in Pasadena. Not a particularly good omen. Then they closed for a few months to renovate, typically not a good decision for a restaurant that changes hands. I didn't have high expectations. I was wrong. When Gus's re-opened, it was transformed into a hip BBQ joint. Stylish in a retro way, with a young and attentive staff, and most important, good barbecue. Its business has picked up and appears to be doing very well, notwhithstanding the current accessibility problems caused by the construction.
Check it out Judy, you'll like it.
One of my favorite places in SoPas!!! Love the baby backs...and the corn bread is absolutely fabulous!!! Real Southern Cornbread...I think even Virginia will like this place!!!
went to Shaker's last night (noted: they have a one-way entrance on Gravelia), and the manager said that they have been suffering quite a bit on weeknights (not as bad on weekends due to lower traffic volume on Fair Oaks). drove by Gus' on the way back, and we noticed they didn't even have a sidewalk out front, but there were people standing outside on the dirt, waiting. great to see people braving the construction to savor their bbq.
We went to Gus's! It's worth fighting traffic for sure.
Those photos on the wall are great. I haven't tried this place but I will definitely check it out.
