Young children often delight in that surprise of the JACK popping out of the box. That little jester guy doesn't creep me out like the circus clowns do but I certainly understand your view of scary. I had one when I was little, but I can't remember what popped out. I don't think it was a clown.
wv: scasiv - combine scary with pensiv(e) and that's what this little guy is
I don't understand the fear some people have of clowns. I know it's real. My intelligent 32 year old daughter has always been creeped out by them. I don't like snakes - I almost stepped on a 4 foot rattler once and it took the rest of the day to calm down.
Honestly, I've never heard of anyone who was afraid of clowns outside of a David Lynch movie. Am I in a David Lynch movie? Mayberry RFD David Lynch style?
In December of 2007, after many years on the west side of Los Angeles (and at least a third of those years spent stuck in traffic on Pico Boulevard) my family settled into a happy little house in South Pasadena. This daily blog covered almost 5 years as I put down roots in my new home town -- and almost 5 more as I settled in and became a South Pas old-timer. Here it is...my time capsule of South Pasadena.

I'm one of the, "don't like clowns" bunch. Whoever said that they are funny?
It's Christmas Eve. Have a happy Christmas. Hugs and kisses for all.
Love the colors. Merry Christmas Eve!
Totally agree with you!
Merry Christmas, Laurie!
Don't let this smile I wear
Make you think that I don't care...
There's some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than

EVERYBODY LOVES A CLOWN
So why can't you?
(A clown has feelings too.)

Merry Christmas everyone.
I like real clowns, and Jack in the Boxes!!! But don't like clown art...if you can call it that!!!
I'm going with scary too. Don't look at those colors if you've had too much eggnog.
Merry, merry!

I know tons of people afraid of clowns. And you're right Margaret, clown art? NO THANKS (shudder)
I'm not afraid of clowns, but in some ways I think they're creepy. So, "creepy" is my choice.
How do I segue from that to Merry Christmas?
Merry Christmas Laurie, Jon, Little Bit and all your readers!
