Fairytale Detail

Just when I thought I knew every house in South Pasadena, I turned a corner and noticed this one. How could I have missed those wonderful, whimsical shutters?

I'm with you, Laurie. I thought I'd seen every house in town, but I've never seen this one. You should ask Jon to go over and clean the leaves out of the gutter.

It so nice to see houses that have unique and personal details. This looks so cosy.
Well seen and well done!:-)

This is a, "Once upon a time" house. I'm glad you discovered it.

Nice. Where is it?

WV: calatak - what the homeless guy calls his purple shopping cart.

"Gingerbread" is the work that popped into my head.

I gave my little clapboard East LA house a similar look. My fence was made from a hand painted sign of a long gone laundromat.

When your short on change but big on curbside finds and paint, you can create your own vision of paradise (as my blog series attests to)

I want those shutters and the windowbox. Maybe I can bribe PA. (Where is this pretty place?)

What a find! Does the owner work at Disneyland, I wonder? Please give us a clue where it is.

LA: I'm surprised you didn't knock on the door and introduce yourself to the sprite who painted these amazing shutters for the world to enjoy... something about the bold artistry reminds me of you.

Utter and complete charm. Pennsylvania Dutch almost. Isn't it fun when a surprise like this shows its colorful facade?

That type of floral based decorative painting is called rosemaling.

It is a Norwegian Folk Art which began in Norway several hundred years ago and as I remember, gave people something to do during the long winters.

There is a Californis rosemaling society which was begun in 1987.

Hey all,

Gold star to Shanna!

I found this adorable cottage while driving around the little streets off Arroyo Drive and Grand -- but I've forgotten which street it is. Closer to El Centro than to COlumbia, tiny street, maybe only 8 houses and each one cuter than the last. I'd been on the street before but never noticed this one.

Yak, remember the wall I painted with all those designs at my old apartment in Palms? I could have used a lesson in rosemaling!

I thought it was similar to rosemaling. Some of the old, old houses in Norway have it covering the inside walls and all the woodwork. I have a few Norski bowls in my house and have taken a stab at it myself.

WV: Rozess. How weird is that?

Wow Shanna the Art Historian of an obscure crafts movement. I found this link from Illinois chapter (and isn't that the state where all the Norsk immigrants headed).
