The curving wall, the Spanish tiles and the dark wood balcony are fabulous enough, but those curtains on the outside of the windows! It's like this old girl is flaunting convention and flashing her petticoats.
Reminds me of some of the skid row winos I used to see who would wear their undershorts on the outside of their pants. Except, this house is clean and probably doesn't smell as bad.
I see the "outside curtains" on a lot of old Spanish styles in Pas and SoPas. My guess is that it was to keep out a) dust or b) insulation against the heat in pre-a/c days.
This is my friend's house! Yay! The house was unlivable when they bought it. They had to live in a trailer in the driveway while it was renovated (that would be my pregnant friend, her husband, and their two daughters ages 5 and 3). They did a beautiful job restoring the house!
my godparents place on the W edge of the Rose Bowl had such curtains for a while on their spanish style place. haven't been by in years, so I don't know if the new owners kept the curtains or not.

Beautiful house!!! And I'm thinking you just might be right Kat...I've also seen the outside curtains on several other Spanish style houses...

I love Mister Earl's idea!
I think Mr. Earl's romantic (and slightly) racey guess wins!
