Sure, we can all appreciate a lavish, artfully manicured jardin filled with heirloom flowers, koi ponds and European sculpture. (That's what The Huntington is for.) But I really love all the groovy little South Pas gardens tucked into flower beds, side yards and window boxes. (Remember this scarecrow? I felt a personal sense of loss when it was recently taken down!)
Here, a hipster sun blows a raspberry over a lawn full of tangled vines. I love this town.

I like the sun on the wall. I can't decide whether it's Gene Simmons from KISS or the Rolling Stones logo. Either way, it's pretty cool.
Wasn't there a guy in Pasadena with the tongue tatooed on his forhead???
Oh dub!! You are right. I think the sun was trying to be uber cool and was humming Honky Tonk Women,so he just put on a pair of sunglasses. I'm curious what color that house is. Yellow? Peachy salmon? Green?
Oh, now I'm going to think of Honky Tonk WOman when I drive by this place!
Jude, the house is beige/yellowish stucco. The color version of this shot is not nearly as interesting.
Can we tempt you to post the color photo? I love the 'raspberry/Honky Tonk' artwork. I'd love to find one...
I too am a fan of garden funk. There's a house/cottage/duplex on the north west end of El Centro with stair railing that have different color glass disks welded into the railings. I always admire them when I pass by
You have the best blog. Great photos, great writing, great headlines, great sense of humor, great depth. Thank you for brightening everyday!
I think the quirky garden stuff suites South Pasadena. If you saw it in my neighborhood it wouldn't have near the charm or humor factor. I like funky. Central and South Austin has tons but not out here in the 'burbs. :(
You Can't Always Get What You Want was the B side to Honky Tonk Women, released July 4, 1969 as a single 45 record.
Love your framing of this shot. At first glance I thought the sun had been spray painted there :-).
