Summer's long days bring such wonderful shadows. There's not much to say about this cool shadow scene from the Farmer's Market. So, I'll just let a couple of guys sing, instead.
The long truck is like a movie screen with the trees having shadow play on it. The guy walking past with the backpack grounds the shot. I like the duplication of the "wheels," (his and the rubber ones). What a killer video. You forget about how fun those old variety shows were til you see a clip like the one of FS and SDJ. WOW
And thanks for finding that rendition of Me and My Shadow. That song was the signature number of Ted Lewis, who was my grandmother's first cousin. Here's Ted doing the song on Hollywood Palace toward the end of his career. Go to 6:00 in the video:
We would drive up the avenue But we haven't got the price We would skate up the avenue But there isn't any ice. We would ride on a bicycle But we haven't got a bike So we'll walk up the avenue Yes, we'll walk up the avenue And to walk up the avenue's what we like.
From a scene in Easter Parade with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire as tramps.
Loved Me and My Shadow with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr.
Leave it to you Laurie to connect this really terrific pic with such a fun remembrance!!! Loved Frank and Sammy's performances together...and the whole "Rat Pack"!!!
Love this shot. I associate backpacks with kids, somehow, and the figure looks young to me, so I was surprised to enlarge this and see this is clearly not a kid.
Hey Mr. Earl!!! Loved the clip of your Great Uncle Ted!!! I noticed a family resemblence!!! And I'll bet if I saw you cutting the rug... I'd see a bit of your Uncle Ted in your dancing!!!
The sun was obviously very low when you took this photo. I find it fascinating that you were able to get such a distinct shadow in the late afternoon. It almost looks like you had artificial light creating the shadow. Very interesting.
Chieftess: As a kid, I think I saw Ted Lewis on Ed Sullivan or Hollywood Palace a few times, and we had one of his albums, but now, through the miracle of YouTube, we can find just about anything. I notice how much like my grandmother he looked, and I did notice his dancing, which I'd never focused on before. He was about 75 in that clip. I hope I can still dance when I'm 75. Thanks for noticing!
In December of 2007, after many years on the west side of Los Angeles (and at least a third of those years spent stuck in traffic on Pico Boulevard) my family settled into a happy little house in South Pasadena. This daily blog covered almost 5 years as I put down roots in my new home town -- and almost 5 more as I settled in and became a South Pas old-timer. Here it is...my time capsule of South Pasadena.

Thank you Charlie's Coffee House for hosting my photo exhibit, South Pas: Observed. From October 2011 through January 2012 my pictures graced the walls of the best place in town to get a cup of coffee!

Great photo, as usual.

Very cool.
Shadows of all kinds are fascinating. My favorites are shadows of foliage that MOVE across the walls inside when the wind is blowing outside.
Great shot... what Judy said!

Great analysis, Judy !
Laurie, I'm seeing many cast shadows in your shots lately. I like the way they juxtapose flatness with form.

Alright ... the shadow Mistress strikes again!
Nice Laurie.

I live side by side with the "Avenues" so does Shanna
Hey everyone!
I'm bleary-eyed tonight and fairly incapable of writing much more than thank you. So thank you! I'll catch up with all of you tomorrow.
Til then...
