Woe is We

The pundits have decided that America is depressed. It's "Mourning in America" according to CNN. (Not to be "blunt," but I'd really like to leave a depression in the head of the guy who came up with that headline.) The right is blaming the left, the left is blaming the right while the economy sinks further into its own sad malaise. If this were an old movie, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney would be figuring out how to put on a show to boost neighborhood morale. In our world, however, everyone is just arguing with each other on the Internet.

The talking heads are right. After months and months of economic woe, endless wars, record unemployment, natural disasters and every single bit of information ever known or ever to be known about Casey Anthony -- the country is seriously bummed out. We can't even watch a sitcom without being bombarded with drug company commercials about all of the deadly health problems we might have.

We all need cheering up. This is bound to help.

That photo is absolutely excellent. Kind of noir in reverse. I love the hints of shadow, the silhouettes and the mostly monochromatic color scheme. The perspective and composition are spot on.

Thanks for the morning laugh. You can only stay depressed for so long, right?

I bury my head in the sand by turning it off (the news, the radio, the TV). I think the Casey Anthony thing is the country's way of doing the same thing. I don't suppose it does us any good but we're not sure what to do but carry on. And read blogs.

Donald O'Conner kept me laughing and laughing non-stop, all without sound. When my earphones are hooked up properly, will he be twice as funny? Thanks, Laurie!

Mourning in America. That is cringeworthy.

Great Donald O'Connor clip. I love him! I can imagine him bouncing around in this picture. It puts a little smile on my face.

I like the (mood of the) picture, Laurie. But yes, we all need some cheering up when it comes to the pictures the media are bringing to us about the reality of the world around us.

Bless you, Laurie, for the good cheer. Judy and Mickey got us out of many a funk with their shows, but Donald O'Conner takes the cake here in "Singin' in the Rain."

The Jive Aces are a very good swing band from London. They play in Pasadena at least twice a year at the Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association. Toni Prima, daughter of Louis Prima, always comes out and sings a few songs with them. Her mother, Keely Smith, has been coming out to the dances the last several times the Jive Aces have been in town. Only in LA!
