It was still quite light out of doors, but inside with the curtains drawn and the smouldering fire sending out a dim, uncertain glow, the room was full of deep shadows.
It has a kind of creepy feel to me. Heavy drapes drawn always make me think someone is hiding something inside. Love how the side plants meet at the top to create a rounded arch against the angular windows and doors. Maybe it's just early morning and they haven't awakened to throw the curtains back and let the light in yet. Is that wood mahogany?
Bershire and Valley View, I think. The rest of the house has been stuccoed or sided, and made fairly ordinary. The doors remain as a remnant of another time (or portal to another world?)
As much as I love Kate Chopin, I'm in a practical mood today: I'm envisioning a penny pinching homeowner with a drafty old home, trying to avoid turning on the A/C. You know, the ol' SoCal "cave it in the morning" technique. ;)
In December of 2007, after many years on the west side of Los Angeles (and at least a third of those years spent stuck in traffic on Pico Boulevard) my family settled into a happy little house in South Pasadena.
