Keeping Warm

June Gloom has morphed into June Schizophrenia. It's supposed to be summertime -- sunny, dazzling Southern California summertime, the kind of golden season immortalized in beach movies and beloved by the makers of sunscreen. Instead, we have an abbreviated version of winter. Don't believe me? Yesterday it was in the low 60s with misty rain for most of the day.

I'm not sure but I think this weird weather is making folks a little bit squirrelly. Just take a look at this person wearing winter gear, kicking up heels among the roses like some kind of misplaced dancing ninja. Is it July yet?

There's nothing to worry about, Laurie. Come the 4th of July, June Gloom will end and those sun-filled days will be the norm. But you'e right, this has been the gloomiest June in memory.

This happy sole is probably looking forward to the Fourth of July festivities known as the Festival of Balloons. It's starts with a pancake breakfast at the Firehouse, followed by one of the world's shortest parades, a picnic in Garfield Park, and ending with a grand fireworks show at the High School. I know two people who chose to move their families to here after celebrating Fourth of July the South Pasadena way.

It gives new meaning to singing in the rain. Ninjas rule!!!

WV: fulls - a multitude of fullness, as exhibited by your happy ninja's jig

I didn't want to bring up the subject of your weird weather. We've had highs of 75º-80º here the last several days. Not necessarily a good thing, we've already had a fewl forest fires.

Chins up kids, it can't last forever.

Mystery solved... this creature is none other than DEATH... who has been so enchanted by the positive South Pasadena vibe that he FORGOT his mission, and has decided to start a rock band!

Viva joie de vivre!!!!

Me, too! But, yeah, I think everyone around here is suffering from SAD, in June, this year.

This is the most intense June Gloom I've experienced in many a year. And I'm really enjoying it. Perfect weather for reading. 10:30 in the morning and I've already finished my Flannery O'Connor biography (and squeezed in a tiny, little nap).

"Don't believe me?"

Gee, if only those from out of state actually knew this gloomy weather is more the norm here in So Cal, instead of the perpetuated myth of palms, bikini's, sunshine, sunglasses, majestic purple mtns, blue jeans. And deep blue skies created by your camera.

Outsiders have it so lucky.

Now this is what I'm talkin' about!!! My sister lives in Oregon and I don't think even she's had this much gloom!!! Thank you DBW for reminding us of the proximity of the 4th of July...sure to be an upswing in sunshine!!!

Our dancin' guy here is simply trying to get his blood goin' so he'll warm up...

The coat and scarf look kind of odd among all the blooming flowers! :)

I flew into LA yesterday, and that cloud cover from the marine layer is something else. It covers the entire LA basin in a blanket of cotton. Don't know how thick it is, but it must have taken around 10 minutes to descend through it. We couldn't see the ground till we were over the 110 freeway next to downtown.

I love that cute dancin', leapin' guy in his winter attire. Maybe he is just trying to keep warm, but among the roses it does look a little strange. I must cease with the weather forecast, but I can't help but notice what a difference between here and there. It was 104yesterday. The air is thick and humid and we had a major storm last night, large hail, breaking windows. Tornadoes sighted. Of course any kind of inclement weather always targets the mobile homes. Many people lost everything.

We have June Gloom in December. Summer is intolerable. And roses would only die on the bush.

Soon it will be back to California summer I feel sure. We look forward to October for relief.

Thanks, everybody!

I am very fond of this photo ... and just love the happy-go-lucky vibe. But honestly, black winter wool with a scarf amid spring roses? I love contrast!

I'm looking forward to that Fourth of July. This is definitely the most intense June Gloom in the 21 years I've been in Southern California.

Until tomorrow... (maybe there will be sunshine!)

I'm really sorry, Laurie. I'ts all my fault. All that spring whining I did sucked the sunshine northward where our June has been sunny and warm and what July normally is for us. It's been cloudy for a couple days now (I'm writing on 6/15), so I hope your sun has returned. Thanks for the loan.

BTW, how much did you have to pay that fellow to go loping past the roses? :-)
This is a fantastic candid. I just love when this stuff happens. Good for you!
