High Stepping

South Pasadena's long history has left behind countless little architectural treasures. If you pay attention, you'll notice marvelous leftovers of other eras ... sometimes literally under your feet. Like these deco steps leading the way to a friend's charming 1930s cottage. Can you imagine Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tapping their way to the top?

the curving line
of where it goes
light dances with shadow
in line and grace
a simple staircase
I think it so much more
sending our eye
up each step
one by one
in wonder

These curved steps, which appear to float, have an organic quality, as if they sprouted overnight like mushrooms.

You have an incomparable eye for the magical and unexpected!

Another award winning photo Laurie, you do have a great eye and ability to capture the artistic version of the subject.

I zoomed in to take a closer look. I scrolled to the bottom 4 steps which appear as a single abstract form. Also makes me wonder about the poor person who has to tend the lawn around these steps.

Nice.

I like it, I like it! It lifts the eye and the spirit. Also, got lost in YouTube's Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. They definitely lift my spirit.

I learned there are 60 videos of them dancing, your blog is soooo educational!

Congratulations on your creative writing and photography over the past year with "Glimpses of South Pasadena". They lift my spirit, too. Thank you so much for your personal vision and creating much more than just snapshots and blah, blah, blog.

So I'll try again. I love this shot and it looks so much like work by minimalist sculptor, Donald Judd. Really. I just googled him and the Wikipedia picture is so similar except that these steps are curvy and lyrical.

I loved the tap dancing on You Tube!!!

Hi folks,

Welcome Gunn White!

I fell in love with these stairs when I saw them leading up to my friend's front door. I can't say that I've ever seen any like them other than in a Busby Berkeley musical number!

Thank you so much for such thoughtful and over-the-top nice words. I really appreciate your comments. (And verse, Judy!) I just love you people.

Til tomorrow...

The very mention of Fred and Ginger makes my heart soar. As a youth I dreamt of dancing with Fred Astaire. Don't you know he breathed a lot of feathers? These steps are definitely an invitation to the dance. What a great shot to enhance the imagination.

This is a gorgeous photo, the shadows are very striking. It reminds of my friends front lawn, maybe it is, she lives on Beech street?
