I grew up drinking the stuff and thought it was one of those American creations like Dr. Pepper. (Now, someone is probably going to tell me Dr. Pepper is really French or something...) I love the things I learn on my own blog!

Pasadena Adjacent, your comment is hilarious. I'm going to tell everyone that I know the grand neice of the carrot cake inventor. :-) I have no stories like that in my family. (Or do I, Mom?)

Here's to cartwheels and ice cream and all the good stuff of summer. Thanks, everybody!Laurie Alleehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14460272282273523408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4926759868384604174.post-28046793844688318682008-09-17T18:09:00.000-07:002008-09-17T18:09:00.000-07:00Never regret a coke float! When I Googled A&W the Canadian site was the first thing to pop up. I didn't look any further.

A&W started in Lodi in 1919. They didn't make it to Winnipeg, the first store in Canada, until 1956.

They are very prominent on the landscape here and have managed to give themselves a Canadian feel but they are as American as apple pie. They used to big on the carhop drive-in arrangement but there aren't any carhops at A&W here any more.

Thanks for catching my goof Ben.

I seem to have kind of highjacked the soda fountain theme. I was just thinking about snapping a picture of that shop the other day - sneak into your territory a bit.

My fellow Canadian is a little off - A&W is in both the US and Canada, in fact it started in California. But as a growed-up girl could still stand on my head into my twenties. The love of ice cream floats and sodas never left me. While beer joints/bars linger, finding an ice cream parlor is a rare find and good for the soul.
