Coffee Talk

There are a lot of ways to satisfy your coffee jones in South Pasadena. Kaldi is a great option, especially if you have your java outside under the trees on one of these warm autumn days. (Just pop a Benadryl first if you're allergic to fall elm. They're pollinating like crazy right now.)

Speaking of coffee, I was listening to the XM Public Radio station yesterday and I caught the last part of a piece about how new words get into the Oxford English Dictionary. Apparently, one of the program hosts was trying to see if she could get the word "flatte" to catch on. That's flatte, pronounced "flah-tay" as in a shortened version of "decaf latte." A local coffee shop even joined in the fun and featured Flatte as their Drink of the Day.

Is it any surprise that not one person ordered a flatte for the entire day? Anyone at Kaldi -- or Charlie's or Busters or Starbucks -- could tell you why. Who in the world wants a DECAF latte?!

I'm sitting here drinking my java which is half decaffeinated. I like to drink two huge mugs and if it is the "real stuff," I get all shaky and jittery. I buy both kinds and mix them together so I can drink more of it without the effects.

My favorite part of the photo is the bicycle. Every time I see one I just love the mix of lines and circles. :)

I love the taste and experience of drinking coffee. It started for me when I was 18 in North Beach in San Francisco, hanging out at Italian espresso bars, at the end of the beat era. I don't drink lattes, but I do love the decaf Americano. Ironically, I started drinking Americanos because the decaf at Starbucks often sits too long and doesn't taste great when that happens. I know people don't understand how folks like me can drink decaf, but we do it for the flavor and the experience. Sadly, I may need to give up decaf, because although it only contains at most 3% of the caffeine of regular, that still may be too much for me right now. Ah life!

I love this shot - the way it's framed, it's near-symmetry, the detail balanced with simplicity. And of course the subject. It's like an illustration of a perfect coffee break.

I suspect that some people were turned off by "flatte" because it was too similar to "flatulence."

WV: explesso - flatulence caused from drinking expresso

Decaf puts the flat in flatte.

I know who drinks decaf lattes: nursing mothers.

Ah yes, nursing. I was bad and still had my half cup of regular coffee every day through pregnancy and nursing. I'm not sure I could have gotten through either without it!

I read somewhere that the process used to decaffeinate is more toxic than caffeine but I'm resigned to the fact that life itself is dangerous to my health. :-)

Laurie, I so enjoy your pretty pictures. Even if this one makes me feel gassy... er or gassed up.

And I'm a Kaldi-waldee flattay-pants.

I've never been one to drink a lot of caffeine, whether in cokes or otherwise. One cup of coffee and I turn into a manic, parkinson's like puppet who zips around, not really accomplishing much, even tho I think I'm uber effective.

So, more than one Coke or more than one decaf anything I get pretty zippy.

I've also never been one much for coffee either---my mother took it black and when I was little and carried her days old coffee cup downstairs to the kitchen at her request, I took a sip. FEH! I'd sooner have volunteered to go to my friend Greg's house where if his mother caught you saying a bad word, she'd literally wash your mouth out with soap!

But I have to admit, not sure that I'd order my decaf soy latte as a "flatte"...along the lines of dbdub...not sure I could get thru it without thinking of the scene from Blazing Saddles

This is a happy picture. I love all of your pretty, happy pictures. I don't do decaf and I know I don't want any Flatte. The name alone is a turn off. Thanks dbdubya.

If I ordered a flatte, I would fall flatte on my face by the end of the day. Gimme the jolt!

Laurie Allee said...

Me: So, has anyone ever ordered a flatte?

Hipster Starbucks Barista: A what?

Me: A flatte. Short for decaf latte.

Hipster Starbucks Barista: If they start calling it that, I swear I quit.

So much for furthering the cause of a new word...
