Grateful

We can't command fate to be more fair. We can't wrestle tragedy into submission, complain to some cosmic general manager or direct life into a more balanced narrative. We can't guarantee our children a safe planet. We can't comprehend world events that make the violent excess of Michael Bay movies seem understated.

But we can be sure of a few things: that marshmallows are better roasted, that hot chocolate smoothes a frayed soul and that when you snuggle with those you love around a fireplace you rekindle hope.

Love that.

The lighting on her profile couldn't be more perfect.

Tomorrow is but a fleeting hope. For sure, we only have right now. This minute. That's my excuse for not putting much stock in long term planning. I'm happy to wake up in the morning and see the sun come up over my house.

You speak the truth. What lovely thoughts and an even lovlier firelit profile of a precious little girl.

Gorgeous. Both the photo and the words.

Beautiful thoughts, Laurie. Especially in light of the tragedy in Japan.

Ain't that the truth. None of my carefully laid out plans are working out right now - and 9th month hormones don't make that very easy to deal with! Mama needs some marshmallows and hot chocolate.

That looks so much like our fireplace that
I wondered at first if you had taken the photo over here. But we have a brick hearth, not one of river rock so it must be yours.
Sitting by our merry fire really brings me into the moment and all my cares vanish.

You are so brilliant. I always sound like such an obsessed fan when I leave a comment but I just think your work is fantastic. Both writing and photography. Plus, you have such a good heart.

A fan in Pasadena

Thank you, thank you, thank you. (And a special thank you to Anon from Pasadena. Wow, you know how to make someone feel great after a shitty day!)

I'm very fond of this shot. It's not often I can grab my camera in time to capture a fleeting moment -- especially when Little Bit is involved -- but I got lucky. Firelight, laughter, chocolate and marshmallows truly help soothe when you're overwhelmed by world events. And personal ones.

Until tomorrow, everyone.
