Closing Time

A lone car, an almost empty lot and a peachy-purple sky prompted me to scramble for my tripod before the light dissolved into black. I had gone to Orchard Supply Hardware for light bulbs and vacuum cleaner bags, but I ended up with inspiration.

This has a very eerie feeling to it. My first thought was that it's Halloween.

WV: calking - I hope you picked up some calking compound while at OSH. Or is it Cal-King, as in the Governator.

It does have a sort of Halloweenish look to it. But a very warm glow from the city lights. Glad you bought some light bulbs so that you can see what you are vacuuming.

OH MY!!!! This is spectacular. The moment I saw it, I could hear Van Morrison's MOONDANCE playing on that radio, as the couple who had driven there and parked do a sexy dance on the asphalt as the sun sets. WOW - this is absolutely FABULOUS.

PS- my 22 year old was on a local radio station yesterday and sang part of that song. It was so cool.

Are you sure that's not a model?

Like these.

Gorgeous photo. I'm so glad you stopped to capture it. I'm always thrilled at finding such beauty in places you would never expect

Never leave home without the camera I always say. I need to grab the tripod more often and eliminate my blurry photos!

Now that's a movie set! Coppola's One From the Heart.

Good morning, kids! Isn't this a cool view? The light only lasted about two minutes so I was lucky to get the shot. Virg is right -- never leave home without a camera! And, in my case, without batteries. (I was talking to DB about being without them recently and missing out on capturing a shot of an old Model T. Drat.)

Judy, I love Moondance. And I love Jeremy's version of it better than Van's!

Welcome, Missdragonflyvintage!

Mom, I am definitely glad I can see what I'm vacuuming. Although at this point the dust bunnies look like REAL bunnies. (Just in time for Easter!)

HIker, Storaro is one of my favorite cinematographers so I'm going to ride around on a high all day thinking I evoked one of his movies! And I realize I've now used way too many exclamation points in this comment. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke..."

I had been saving that quote for a special occassion!!!!!!!

Tripod? I have to scramble around looking for a lamppost or newspaper box.

My tripod probably only weighs 5 lbs. but it feels like 50 lbs. after about 10 feet.

Never saw One From The Heart but I think the music was written by Tom Waits.

The Hubman and I went to Jax Bar and Grill in Glendale for dinner and an evening of jazz....the Garner James band played a fabulous rendition of "Moondance"!!!!
The band was awesome...and dinner was wonderful as usual!!!

Oh Chieftess! Wish I could have heard the jazz band.

Wayne - I rarely mess with a tripod either. I like to just grab my camera and go. I've used the roof and hood of the car, my knee, a fence stump.....

the photos you have to scramble for are usually the best!

Oh, my tripod is my buddy. A leftover remnant of film school -- always have a tripod with you. I've definitely put the camera on the car roof or on a bench but it always ends up with weird light reflections from the car or a big swath of bench at the bottom.

Yes, I'm a control freak.

Definitely check out Jeremy's interview. My nephew's voice is so perfect. His songwriting is amazing, too. CHeck out his original recordings onhis my space page.

Oh, god, Laurie. What a beauty. What kind of tripod do you have? I have an old clunker that takes so long to set up that with fleeting light like this I don't even bother. It would make me sad except I can come and look at this.

I have a monopod..haven't quite figured out how to keep it steady and still take a pic...

I'm also looking at tripods...geeze...never knew photography would be this complex!!!

Hi P and Chieftess! I can't remember the maker of my tripod -- it's the best one I've had. Jon and I got it along with a video camera as a wedding present from his family. I'll look tomorrow and let you know. What I love is that it's lightweight with easy levers that open and close quickly as you adjust the legs. I always have it in the car -- hey, it could double as a weapon! ;-)

Thanks, yes, do let us know. I have a monopod too. It helps, but it's not quite the same.

I LOVE this photo. So simple, yet eerily beautiful.
