Mayberry's Underbelly...

This is surely the most depressing doorway in South Pas.

down in the tunnel
lurks evil and dread
is something down there?
rotting and dead?

or am I a freak
for thinking it so
it could be stored ice cream
or candy below

Love it, Judy! That candy and ice cream line has a little Hansel and Gretel sinister to it when applied here.
Because I've never matured beyond 13, my first thought was this: If you opened that door, I wonder if you could skateboard down the stairs, fly through the foyer, careen through the family room and land safely on dad's California King?

It's an optical illusion. It's really going upstairs.

Judy, I love that! Next time I feel a creeping anxiety, I'm going to repeat that poem like a mantra.

Mr. Earl: This photo DOES have an odd, Escheresque quality. The stairs vaguely resemble railroad ties, as if this were the line that transports illegally obtained cadavers to the mad doctor's secret laboratory.

And the address numbers appear to melt like candles above the door. I had to enlarge the photo to see what they were. All that's missing is the sign that says: "Ye who enter, surrender all hope."

Is this a great location for a rave, or what?

Looks like a conveyor belt with stairs where humans are turned into Soilent Green.

When the door opens, you hear this:

You guys are great! Except for you, Earl. I'm now going to be hearing The Candy Man well into the night. (Shudder!)

:-)

Love the poetry, love the weirdness, and even love the Candy Man. Thanks for playing, everyone.

Til next post...

Oh, and props to Mom for the speakeasy reference! That's one of the things that crossed my mind when I saw this place. Well, that and some horrid laboratory of a vivisectionist... but I digress.

Like I said, until next post! :-)

Is that the tunnel off of Indiana and Monterey? Chills I think it was open when I use to go to south pas class of 1982 you so the math!

A guy used to live there. My boyfriend delivered papers and this was one of the stops. It was creepy as all get out to think he had no windows and that was the sole entry into the place.
