Food for Thought

As I've pointed out before, Nicole's Gourmet Foods is a fantastic spot for both dishing and noshing, offering a cozy outdoor setting for conversation and a great selection of yummy French goodies. It's such an inviting spot that when I walk by during off hours and look at those empty chairs, I imagine all the incredible My Dinner with Andre-type discussions I might have there. In fact, I've envisioned these scenarios enough that now when I walk by it's as if I'm actually remembering these imaginary conversations. (I'll never forget that great one about quantum physics I had with Michio Kaku and the ghost of Truffaut...)

Like Dali said, "The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant."

My flights of fancy may be artificial, but Nicole's is the real deal.

I need to come down to visit Nicole so I can see Laurie. (Especially with all de vacant seats) My imagination runs wild with all the incredible My Brunch with Laurie type discussions about sports and fashion I could have there!

Mom and I have the theory that at night chairs and tables walk about almost like a vampire would come alive after dark. Perhaps these, being less heavy, might even fly around and then once the sun starts to rise, just land around the heavier tables with reckles abandon. I rather like that idea.

That Dali quote just sent me to the moon. Our imaginations truly are jewels and people don't rely on them nearly enough.

And then there are tables that cannot move because they are too large, like Judy's coffee table in her den. The poor thing must feel left out.

Noshing? Is that a word you schlepped from Texas? Oy and Oui! (I think that's a book by Martin Buber. OMG I almost typed "Boober.")

I have a wire mesh female torso mounted on my wall... it's a "shadow sculpture," and the shadow cast through the mesh creates an amazingly detailed image.

The sculpture actually has a name... Laura... given to her by the sculptor, whose work is widely known.

LA, let's take "Laura" to this cafe to see what she thinks of it. After the chairs have returned from their night flight, of course.

You guys are awesome.

Marion, welcome! Thank you for your kind words. I must go check out your painting blog. (Everyone join me!)

Altadenahiker, I'm psyched to have another sister. But you'd better not chase me around the house with a vacuum cleaner like Judy did...

Yak, I had no idea that sculpture was named Laura. Honestly, I'm a little hurt. I mean, Laurie would have been a nice choice too, ya know...

Mister E, you should see a Texan nosh on chicken fried steak. We get positively verklempt!

Mom, I still think that little table in your room tiptoes around the house at night.

Ah yes, I knew this post would end up in silly town. Or, Cafe, the stuff that dreams are made of.

Until next time, everyone. :-)

I took a similar photo in Boston a couple of years ago. Beautiful, I like it.
