Threshold

The ee cummings-worthy sign on the door, as nebulous as it is descriptive, is just one of the reasons I love this place. (And no, there's no men's entrance. This is it.) It's on Fair Oaks in the middle of town, not far from the more zen-like sanctuary of Mission Street Yoga. Sure, kundalini energy is nice and all, but I'm happy to know that if things get too overwhelming, I'm just a hop, skip and a jump (or maybe a kick) away from some serious grrrrl-fighting expertise.

It just makes me chuckle that women is parenthetically placed on the signage.

I like the linear "up and down" quality, which may in some way be symbolic of what lies inside. Perhaps there is an Eastern European instructor with a wonderfully appropriate accent giving the lessons. The more I look at it, the more it sparks my imagination.

Last week I watched the Russ Meyer cult film, "Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill!"

Three statuesque exotic dancers used kick boxing (and karate and other techniques) to dispatch lecherous men... oh, and also to steal a treasure from one of the lechers! They could have taken lessons at this studio, which has a fantastic, fifty-ish vibe!

Does this mean that Mr. Earl and I are not welcome? Where can we get kick boxing lessons so we'll be able to defend ourselves from the statuesque exotic dancers described by Yak?

Yakpate said...

dbdubya... You and Mr. Earl are NOT lechers, so you're safe! However, if either of you possesses a hidden treasure... maybe you should avoid establishments that advertise live nude girls!

To get in, you have to pull the door open. To get out, after toning those muscles, you can just give it a big kick.

Bellis, that is great!

Yak, would you believe I've never seen that film? I really feel like I'm missing out on part of pop culture.

LA... what I like most about the film is that all the actresses are "zaftig." (A description that, when applied to Margaret Cho, drove her to tears.)

I LOVE that zaftig look... Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell had it... Now THEY could have kicked some anorexic-starlet butt!

Hahahaha, Mad G. We should get all the grrls together for a good fight.

Except I don't want to fight. But we should get the grrls together for a good something.

Petrea - Can Mr. Earl and I come along?

Who needs boxing? I get a kick out of you!

Yak: Those ladies might be considered zaftig in some circles, but usually it means much more than that!!

DBW and I are up for whatever's going on with da goils!

I suspect they may need a pair of chaperones, Mr. E.

I'm there!

Kicks just keep gettin' harder to find
And all those kicks ain't bringin' you peace of mind....

dbdubya, of course you and Mr. Earl can come, but you have to enter through the side door.

No, no, not zaftig--Ziegfeld! This store is the only retail outlet in north America for pirated videos of the pilot for I Love Lucy in which Lucy joins a chorus line of high kickers who box pastries while dancing. Unfortunately, there was a mixup in wardrobe and she came out wearing cowboy boots, a Dutch farm-girl wig and a Roman toga. But Ricky loved her anyway... And you thought the CIA was clever...

Yakpate said...

Anton: cool retail outlet aside... Ziegfeld girls WERE zaftig!

I used to think the CIA was clever until I read "The Men Who Stare at Goats" by Jon Ronson.

Well, there's a subtle, but critical distinction between clever and smart. But we are straying from the subject...

You guys are too much. Thank you for all the great comments. I am bleary-eyed tonight, so I'll catch up with you tomorrow. Until then.

Zaftig, Ziegfeld, Voluptuos, "a rose by any other name is still a rose"...face it, they're just plain old sexy as hell!!!! (And what we Baby Boomer girls dreamt of becoming when we were very young)
