Dusk

Twilight time is so peaceful along South Pasadena streets. You might see someone jogging, or walking a dog. You might hear faint music from an open window or passionate song from a mockingbird perched in a nearby palm. It's hard to believe there is so much turmoil in the streets half a world away.

DREAMS in the dusk,
Only dreams closing the day
And with the day's close going back
To the gray things, the dark things,
The far, deep things of dreamland.

Dreams, only dreams in the dusk,
Only the old remembered pictures
Of lost days when the day's loss
Wrote in tears the heart's loss.

Tears and loss and broken dreams
May find your heart at dusk.

Dusk, to me , has always been the time of MAGIC.
I try always to have a candle burning, or a fire in the fireplace as dusk approaches.
And when the LIGHT outside equals the LIGHT inside - that - ...is the time of MAGIC.

Purple and dusk seem to go together. Wonderful photo, Laurie. I love all of the colors.

And here in Austin it is as if the whole world is on fire. It was officially 105 yesterday. There are times when I wonder if I can make it through another summer. I only go outside when I have to. No concerts in the park, no picnic blankets except for the brave of heart. We look forward to October when we know that a north wind is on its way. Shanna, I envy your ritual, regardless of the season.

Not another moment could go by looking at this beautiful purple image, without listening to, and soaking in the lyrics of:

STARDUST

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that were apart

You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by

Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely night dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
Now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
A paradise where roses bloom
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of loves refrain

Mitchell Parish & Hoagy Carmichael, 1929

Palm trees - I've never noticed that there were so many palm trees in South Pasadena until I started looking at the town through Laurie's lense. Because of the heavy canopy of oaks, camphors, and other trees, you tend to not see the tall, swaying palms in the distance. They are not my favorite. I prefer trees that provide shade. But, I've come to appreciate them more when they are in the distant skyline like this shot.

Looks like a movie set. Ditto on the colors.

So peaceful and the poem is a nice compliment.

I had an OP t-shirt in the 8th grade that used these same colors, even with the black palm tree outlines.

Judy,I think that Stardust is my all time favorite song. My mother loved twilight and I remember her sitting outside in a lawn chair drinking in the purple dusk.

The gold and purple are terrific; you manage to get so much atmosphere into this photo.

Dixie Jane: Our mother sat outside drinking at dusk??? Maybe that is why I drink, draw, or take photos at that time.

And we bought our house/studio especially for the view.

Beautiful photo! Is the wall really purple or does it just seem that way?

Hi gang,

Welcome, Kaori! The wall isn't purple at any other time of day than twilight -- I had noticed the violet cast of sunset light on the usually-white wall and I had to try and capture it.

Judy, I love Stardust almost as much as Mom! My favorite recording is Hoagy Carmichael singing it himself.

DB, I'm crazy about palm trees -- especially here. We have the best of all worlds with the many canopied heritage trees lining streets and the happy, whimsical palm topknots bobbing along above. I honestly don't think I could ever live anywhere that didn't grow palm trees.

Farmgirl, I remember those shirts!

THanks for all the kind words today, people. Until tomorrow.

Really excellent photo. I remember Ashley and I were last walking in South Pasadena at twilight and there were a bunch of people just out and about. It's such a great area for walking and a feeling of community. There aren't many places in LA where one can feel completely safe.

Good job capturing that in your photo and description.

THanks, Oleg. One of these days I'm going to run into you and that gorgeous Ashley!
