A View from the Farmer's Market

Today is Thursday, and that means that by later this afternoon the South Pasadena Farmer's Market will be burgeoning with homegrown goodies and bustling with hometown fun. The market is not only a gastronome's delight, but a feast for the eyes, too. I often get so caught up in taking pictures of the people there, I forget to pick up the giant strawberries or baby greens I was shopping for. (I just came across a bunch of shots I took there last September. I liked this one so much, I wanted to share it.)

If you are anywhere near Mission and Meridian this afternoon, make sure to stop by and see what all the fuss is about. I suggest you have some grilled corn on the cob while you're there. But beware: it's so addictive, you might just dream about it!

The beauty in the foreground of this shot is the incarnation of the nymph in Bottecelli's Birth of Venus. Is there a time-shift conversion at this Farmer's Market? Like, next to the roasted corn vendor, a portal through which characters real, created and literary can travel between eras?

What I like most is the bright arc of light on her right forearm. I'm a huge fan of catching people in mid-stride too. I want to be there right now. :~)

She has a real late 60's early 70's vibe about her. This could easily have been taken then as now.

So your farmer's market rolls on all year??? Ours won't crank back up till April I think. I can hardly wait. I'm like a secret agent with my camera! THis one is great. She has that petulant teenager look about her. Maybe Mom just called her!HA And now it's 10:00 and I want some grilled corn. I need to learn to do that on my grill.

Our fledging Farmer's Market is hit and miss, but it is every Saturday. Love this shot. She really has stepped straight out of the" Virgin Suicides." and looks to be stepping out of the image.

She also looks like she might want to strangle someone.

yes, Virginia, in most CA towns, farmer's markets go year round...thanks to the weather we've had the last week+ of 75F temps---tho we have storms coming in for the foreseeable future.

Laurie---my first blush on the pic I thought "Gee, that looks like she took that 35 (plus) years ago at Garfield". The shirt is a takeoff on the gym shirts gals had to wear at SP JrHigh ahem, a few years ago, but this one is tank top--vs short sleeved gym shirts.

Second thought was---wow, I new it had been warm of late...then continued reading it is an older pic.

Love it, love it, love it...keep on taking pics!

She is truly lovely. Her hands say that she has just seen her boyfriend sharing grilled corn with another girl.

Sally don't you go

Saddest thing in the whole wide world
See your baby sharing grilled corn with another girl

Trish - I lived in the BA when the "Flintstone House" was built and for awhile thereafter. Sounds like you did too. Originally, it was a light tan color. I always wondered what is like inside. Meet me at Crystal Springs Dam tonight and we'll go up there an check it out!

I've lived in Pasadena for 18 years and still have never been to the South Pas farmer's market! I really do need to get out more.

Hey kids,

Yakpate, you and I share a brain because as soon as I saw this young woman, I called her Venus in my head. She really reminds me of the Botticelli painting -- only in a 70s incarnation, like Judy and Trish picked up on. I often find that people at the Farmer's Market often look slightly out of time in my photos. It's convinced me that Mission and Meridian is a portal to other eras, and people come through for the great corn on the cob!

Virg, Babooshka, Altadenahiker and DIxieMom, I love that you two picked up on the slightly angry, brooding vibe! I thought a boy must have been involved, too. (Aren't they always!?) I like Mister Earl's lyrics for this...

Stephane and PIO, you MUST come to the market and see how great it is. I know, I know, you think you've been to a Farmer's Market. But you haven't been to (one that is over a time travel portal) I mean, one that (has the best corn on the cob in this or any dimention) I mean, you haven't been to one quite as fun as this one. I think the many prepared food vendors make it the most fun. You can go for a great dinner, perch out on the grass to eat it, listen to whatever traveling musician has come by and watch a great parade of people. Just don't forget to buy the produce you came for.

Walker, thank you!

Cafe, just don't put up a barricade... okay? :-)

Until tomorrow, everyone.

Being a resident of South Pas, I had just discovered how beautiful and interesting your blog was when I stumbled across this photo.
Of myself.
At first I was shocked, then I just knew I had to leave a comment behind.
(I spend an absurd amount of time at Farmer's and around the library with my friends, since it's conveniently close to the high school and my house, so I suppose I shouldn't be all that surprised that this cropped up. I also noticed one from August that had someone from my school in it.)
I actually really like this picture, though... While I have no clue what I had been so angry about, I tend to brood about nothing more than one really should.
Do you mind if I use this?
