Sidewalk Observation...

Yoga is said to help bring about states of harmony, balance and joy. Well, I'm a believer even without being a practitioner because every time I walk past Mission Street Yoga, I am struck by the pleasing combination of colors and textures -- it's a little bit of a trippy, happy holiday to just pass by.

Today, I noticed this woman in the window. Her shirt matches one column, her purse matches another, and she appears so perfectly placed, it's as if someone sent an art director ahead of me to set up a great shot . Harmony! Balance! Joy!

Remind me to check out the class schedule because I love the vibe of this place.

I am almost positive that the plant in the foreground is papyrus. Papyrus, of course, holds a major place in history - Art History - anyway. And , this is all off the top of my head - what is it..2:00 a.m.???
...please forgive my lapse into professordom...
The papyrus plant grew in abundance along the Nile River in ancient Egypt. The reeds were pounded into strands, which were made into an early form of paper.(OMG) Does the word paper seem to resonate with the word, papyrus?
The scrolls. such as the Gnostic "Nag Hammadi Texts", discovered in Egypt in the late 20th century, as well as the more obvious "Dead Sea Scrolls" were written, by hand, by scribes, on rolls made of papyrus.

I bought one of these beautiful plants and have seen them used decoratively in modern landscaping.

I always smile and think of Cleopatra when I see one.

I like how she is perfectly placed between the stalks of the plant.

Maybe her name IS Cleopatra. Love Shanna's history lesson.

The more I see of South Pasadena, the more i love it. Places like this seem so fresh, so inviting. You live in a lovely place, Laurie and you present it to us so beautifully.

Love that green and pink, and the reflection in the car window.

You are right: all colours match perfectly well, even the reflections in the car window!
Have a nice weeken, Laurie!!

Our neighbor added papyrus. I loved it and wanted some. But it needs water, lives in water actually. Darn. I got Mexican sage instead. Turns out hummingbirds love my sage and could care less about the papyrus. Harmony and balance has been restored to our neighborhood and to my heart, no yoga involved.

I like all the colors and lines in this photo. Somehow they all fit together. Very nice!

Thanks, Walker, for that tip about Mexican sage attracting butterflies! And Shanna, for that wonderful lesson that woke up my brain even before I finished my coffee!

Laurie, although SouthPas is indeed special, I'm convinced that the reason so many of your shots are so gorgeous is because that's the way you see your world. I love everything about this photo, from the colors to the angles, to the depth created by the reflections to the beauty in the window... all captured by the beauty behind the lens.

I could be related to her. I think we use the same hair dye and eyeliner anyway. At first I thought she was a model in the window. Funky image, flowing sparky colours could be chaotic, but no perfectly balanced.

When I look at this photo, tie dye comes to mind.

When was the last time someone attempted to make paper out of papyrus? maybe squish some Conchineal bugs for ink. Perhaps with a stick of bamboo, we could fashion it into a pen.

I take yoga classes there--and they are wonderful. I really like the Sunday evening Restorative class with Jessika...Great photo!

I--cough--attempted to make paper from papyrus. The process takes much skill and patience, and it was soon apparent this would not be my metier. But if done right, the result can be beautiful.

Another great photo - the colors, the subject in the window. It almost looks staged with the woman'd shirt matching the pillar and her purse matching the post next to it. How do you do it, Laurie?

Petrea Burchard said...

Practically edible. Love the colors.

This pic is so purty! Laurie, how do you do it? It does look art directed!

At first glance I thought she was a mannequin in the window.

the colors vibrate in the photo - nice capture of "Cleo". and even though I love color in general, for yoga I'd like earth tones.

Yesterday's Craftsman is wonderful! No Craftsman in PV that I've come across, but there are plenty in Long Beach & you are right - so tough to photo well.

I love those ancient water plants too. I think they date back to the age of the dinosaurs, but I haven't looked that factoid up. Proceed with caution.

Hi everyone,

I have to say, I dearly love this shot. It's technicolor/psychedelic and still harmonious -- and it was just a random lucky shot, which is always my favorite kind of photo. Just happening upon stuff like this makes me feel like life really is magical, and happy surprises are just waiting to be discovered if you look around.

Shanna, thank you for the lesson about papyrus! I did not know that was the cool, prehistoric looking plant in the shot -- but I love that it is.

Judy, it was total luck that I caught her in that spot! In an instant, she moved.

Jilly, I often feel like South Pas is a special, whimsical alternate universe. Yesterday, I was out without a camera -- something that rarely happens. In that short drive I saw someone walking down the street in a bunny suit, and later two girls with umbrellas wearing those weird masks like the people at the party in Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut." Like I said, a whimsical alternative universe...

ALtadena, I'm mad for those colors, too.

Thanks, Blognote! Happy weekend to you, too.

Walker, I'm all for hummingbirds. THey definitely increase harmony! (And no sore muscles involved.)

Thanks Halcyon! It's nice to see you.

Yak, you are way too kind. Anyway, we speak the same language, yes?

Babooshka, I KNEW you were a raven-haired girl! Now I'm going to think of you whenever I see this image.

Dbdubya -- sheer luck. That's it. (And I'm quick on the draw with a camera...)

Thanks, Petrea and Farmgirl.

Pasadenapio, I thought the same thing when I first noticed her!

Tash, if you're so inclined to sneak over to Long Beach to shoot those Craftsmans... you know I'm obsessed and always trying to hook my fellow photobloggers...

Elaine, they really do look ancient, don't they?

Thanks, everyone. Until tomorrow...
