South Pasadena in the Media

PBS Now aired a fascinating story yesterday about the rising price of gas in this country and how it is literally fueling the housing crisis. South Pasadena was featured as an ideal pedestrian enclave centered around the Metro Gold Line train. If you watch the clip, you'll see some great video from this part of downtown, right near Mission Station.

(Thanks go to Wayne -- of the wonderful Vancouver Daily Photo -- for the heads up about the show.)

What a timeless shot. Is that Oppie and Andy coming down the street?? Good one L.

Wayne and Laurie: Thanks for the heads up. I just watched the video at pbs.org. The South Pas part starts at 50% or 11:42. I take the Gold Line to work every day. My employer pays for it. I park in the garage underneath the condos. I'm sure they found out about South Pas by reading Laurie's blog! I was interviewed by Channel 9 news at the Gold Line Station when gas prices were approaching $5 a month or two ago. A couple people came up and said they saw me on the news. Ms. Laurie, I'm ready for my close-up!

Laurie... If I board a train at this station, will it take me back in time? I want to escape to the era when "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" was a valid comment on the political scene.

And why wouldn't there be a route that travels back in time? Look at all those gorgeous parallel lines in your shot, two sets, one juxtaposed above the other. A sure sign that SouthPas is the gateway to a parallel, more genuine universe!

Great mix of lines. This is certainly classic like Virginia said. I'll be whistling the Andy Griffith theme song all day now. I so appreciate those long shadows - they add so much dimension to an image. :~)

Opie and Andy... I've actually been to Mt. Airy, North Carolina, boyhood home of Andy Griffith and the original Mayberry. Worth stopping by if you're in that area.

Only in our area moment today: While returning from Starbucks I got stuck going 4 mph behind South Pasadena's Rose Parade float, out for a mechanical test drive, complete with police escort.

The video makes a very interesting connection that seems obvious in retrospect. And South Pasadena looks pretty nice in the video and in your photo too.

Now you have to hunt down the couple that lives around the corner with their baby in the condos. HAH!

Sorry my bloggy is so soggy. Please don't feel uncherished! Do not! Your comments and everything you write, my dear, are quite enriching.

Here's your song for today: Crazy Train

I like the idea of a high speed train to S.F. (2 hr commute)

-Marshmallow kisses!

Yes madame, now that was an attention-holding Now show last nite. I may have missed de part where Laurie was in it.

MrEarl: i know the feelin (2 often) bout being caught up in traffic/detours becuz of these supersized Rose parade floats. Even when I don't attend the parade, I end up having 2 wait & see them up close n personal on whatever street i'm driving on at the time. In fact, 1 time i was in the Downey area round midnite & what do I see?? The Downey Rose float speedin toward Pasadena at 5mph!!

That's evolution 4 u.

Floats. There is no escape.

Mister Earl said...

Yes. One time I was heading west on Huntington at about Rosemead. I had just left a New Year's Eve party. Suddenly, traffic slowed to 3-4 mph. I saw five or six floats up ahead (from Fiesta Floats in Duarte), headed for Orange Grove via Fair Oaks. I did some quick calculations and decided it would take around an hour to complete what should be a 10-minute trip. I bailed at the first possible moment!

Cafe Observer said...

Nah, u don't wanna beheading west on Huntington - east is better if u prefer to view the parade at nite on Huntington rather than on Colorado.

I can see how 3-4 mph traffic can really cause you a headache, Speedo!

Good piece on PBS, but now I'm depressed because I searched the daily photo site for South Pasadena and it didn't turn up anything. So I registered there and started a little daily photo blog - only yesterday. Funny, I Googled too, and didn't find you. Your photos are better than mine will ever be - anyway please drop me line at junkforsarah@yahoo.com - because I don't wanna step on your toes, as it were.

I see faces, one with big teeth, one looking uncertain.

I'm still laughing at Elaine's comment!

"an ideal pedestrian enclave"
Ohhh, I am sooo envious!

Hey kids,

Thanks again, Wayne, for pointing me to such a cool story. I agree with Benjamin that it makes a connection that seems obvious in retrospect.

Mister Earl, I wish I'd seen your spot on Channel 9 news!

Yak -- Mr. Smith Goes to Washington... sigh... you know that is one of my all time favorites, right? (One of my fabulous readers knows where Capra lived around here -- help me out, in my foggy Mom brain -- because I can't recall if it was Alhambra or Pasadena...) This place is infused with the Capra vibe.

Miss H, my hubby would laugh. He is always trying to get me to sing Crazy Train.

Anonymous -- well now, let us know who you are and where we can find you!

Elaine, I see the faces, too. (At least now that you pointed them out to me!) That is just too wonderful.

Thanks for being here, folks. Til tomorrow...
