Frozen Delights

Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain proves that Busters isn't the only place on Mission Street to grab some ice cream. And it's a good thing, since our hot September days are dragging out summer's length as far as it will stretch. Watching this little girl almost made me regret ordering a coke float instead of a cone.

A coke float is an excellent choice too!

We still have a few pharmacy/soda fountains around but they are a dying breed. Glad this little girl is getting to experience the joy of a cone at the corner shop.

The best way to eat ice cream! All drippy and gooey!

When I opened up the photo I noticed the A&W Root Beer sign on the wall.

A&W is Canadian and I didn't know they were in the States.

You could have had a Root Beer float Laurie. I don't drink that stuff much now but it was really good when you bought it on tap served in a frosty mug. I still have two big glass mugs that I bought from A and dub many, many years ago.

I order ice cream in cups because I'm basically a slob and can't eat an ice cream cone without dripping it on myself.

Another great subject Laurie.

What makes so many of us lose the capacity for sheer, over-the-top, cartwheel-turning delight when we become adults?

Well, not all of us. To consistently capture the delightful images that issue from your camera, Laurie, you must really love our dog-eared world. And I bet you have more than one flavor of ice cream in your freezer!

Ice cream..(gelato is best) is my favorite milk group!

I became an adult a long time ago and never was good at cartwheels, yak. But as a growed-up girl could still stand on my head into my twenties. The love of ice cream floats and sodas never left me. While beer joints/bars linger, finding an ice cream parlor is a rare find and good for the soul. Hooray for you, Laurie, and the little girl with her ice cream cone making memories.

Too cold for ice cream, I'm rubbish at cartwheels but used to be able to headstand pretty well, and soda bars aren't really popular over here. Unfortunate, but we do have a good milkshake bar that sells really weird falvours like midget gems and coffee ice cream!

Scarlet is right, we never got the soda bug here. A real shame to me, such a family environment. Her face is delightful cramming that frozen goody into her mouth. Treasured image.

Awesome picture Laurie! I was just thinking about snapping a picture of that shop the other day - sneak into your territory a bit.

My fellow Canadian is a little off - A&W is in both the US and Canada, in fact it started in California. The Canadian branch is now completely independent of the US company and is a little different in a few ways. I was curious Wayne, so I checked out the Wikipedia article...

This is what happens when you do sloppy research. When I Googled A&W the Canadian site was the first thing to pop up. I didn't look any further.

A&W started in Lodi in 1919. They didn't make it to Winnipeg, the first store in Canada, until 1956.

They are very prominent on the landscape here and have managed to give themselves a Canadian feel but they are as American as apple pie. They used to big on the carhop drive-in arrangement but there aren't any carhops at A&W here any more.

Thanks for catching my goof Ben.

I seem to have kind of highjacked the soda fountain theme. Sorry about that Laurie.

I was told that the bar (in your photo) was purchased here from a hotel in Joplin Missouri. Supposedly my grandmother worked at the bar. I was also told that my grand Uncle Wilbur invented carrot cake. I'm not completely sold on my families lore.

A real soda fountain, how wonderful! That is something I really miss. I remember at least two places in my home town in Illinois where we would stop after school for a vanilla or cherry coke! That little girl is certainly enjoying that ice cream cone.

Never regret a coke float! That little girl is so in the moment with her ice cream.

Hi gang,

Welcome West Coast grrlie blather and Hope!

Wayne and Ben, I never knew A&W had anything to do with Canada. I grew up drinking the stuff and thought it was one of those American creations like Dr. Pepper. (Now, someone is probably going to tell me Dr. Pepper is really French or something...) I love the things I learn on my own blog!

Pasadena Adjacent, your comment is hilarious. I'm going to tell everyone that I know the grand neice of the carrot cake inventor. :-) I have no stories like that in my family. (Or do I, Mom?)

Here's to cartwheels and ice cream and all the good stuff of summer. Thanks, everybody!
